Commander’s Corner:

Comrades and Sisters,

It is a sad duty that I have to perform; to notify our Comrades and Sisters of the passing of Comrade Steve Mayer, Sgt Maj, USMC Ret “Old Sarge” on 18 Oct.  He was at Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec. 1941 and served during WWll, Korea and Vietnam.  He will be missed by all those that he has touched.

The State Meeting was held on Sunday 12 to 14 Oct.  As voted and passed last year, the Post meeting following a State Meeting will be a Joint Post and Auxiliary meeting to take place on the first Sat. of the month following the State Meeting. In this case, 3 Nov. at 1000 hours.

Veterans Day Weekend:  on Sat. 10 Nov. St Marys will celebrate Wounded Warrior Day in recognition of those wounded in combat.  Starting time is 1000 hours at Oak Grove Cemetery.  At this time not all of the details have been completed.

12 Nov. Do not forget Our Veterans Day Parade in Kingsland.  More information is included below in the Newsletter.

Do not forget Thanksgiving Day celebration at the post on 22 Nov.

The ride for Toys for Tots will take place on 24 Nov. and terminate at the Post, lunch to follow.

Kitchen: The kitchen is back in operation.  The initial food handling training will have taken place when you receive this.  The health inspection is scheduled on 6 Nov.

We need volunteers to help with other projects and functions.  The same Comrades and Sisters are always available and could use some relief!  See Comrades Jesse, Tom or members of the House Committee, Post Officers.  A work day will take place on 17 Nov. to clean up the Post grounds.

Yours in Service,

Post CDR Roger Swift

President’s Piece:

Ladies,

It’s been a busy month!  We had the State meeting in Macon October 12-14 and there was very poor participation.  Let’s try to get more people to attend the meeting in February.  Those dates are February 15-17, 2008.  Start planning now to attend.  It’s a great way to meet & greet other members of our organization from all over the state and learn what the organization is all about.  It is very informative and fun!

I want to personally thank all the ladies that assisted in helping to put the kitchen back in order.  If you haven’t been in to see the changes you should make the time to go by.  Still more work to come but it is slowly getting there.  Before long we will have a Post home that we can all be proud of!

We’ve got a lot of things coming up in the next few months.  Please make an effort to attend the next meeting so you can be aware of everything that we have planned and we badly need your help.  Everyone is needed to make our Auxiliary successful!  The next meeting will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:00.  We look forward to seeing you there!

We have extended the early bird membership drive.  The deadline to be considered for the free life membership or $100 is 30 November 2007.  Please send your dues to the Auxiliary Address:  LAVFW Post 8385, P O Box 5213, St. Marys, GA  31558.

LAVFW 8385 President

VETERANS DAY, NOVEMBER 11TH

The Annual Veterans Day Parade will be held this year on Monday, November 12th at 1000 in Kingsland.  The Kingsland mayor will be in attendance again this year.  Master Chief Pew from COMSUBGRU 10 will be the Master Of Ceremonies.   The parade is drawing more and more people each year and it is very rewarding to see the community and fellow veterans there, waving their flags, bringing their young ones.  So spread the word to your family, your friends and to your co-workers, invite them to come on out to the parade and let’s all show our support for all of our veterans; past, present and future.

If you would like to march in the parade, we will meet up at 0900.  Just look for us along with all the other participants, we will line up off of Hwy 40, south of Boone Street.

Lunch will be served at the post home after the parade, hamburgers and hotdogs.  The Ladies Auxiliary will be providing the side dishes, these donations are greatly appreciated and very much needed since we will also be receiving guests from our community.

The LAVFW will also be sponsoring a Cake Auction during lunch!   Proceeds will go to our LAVFW programs.  Please bring a cake donation to auction off.  Be creative, want to have a theme?  Want to include a name for your cake to make it more “auction able” ?

How about “Veterans Day Red Velvet Cake” by ____________?

We will have index cards if you want to label your donation!

Olan Mills Fundraiser

On Sunday, November 4th from 11 am - 7 pm the Ladies Auxiliary will be conducting a fundraiser to benefit our General Fund.  Our attempts last month were a bust mainly due to lack of publicity, but we’re not giving up yet.

Individuals/Families who donate a minimum of $10 to the Auxiliary General Fund will receive a FREE Olan Mills gift certificate good towards (1) 10 x 13’ portrait OR  (1) kids pack  which consists of (1) 8 x 10, (2) 5 x 7s, and 8 wallets (child/or children in the photo must be under 12 yrs old).

Note: Families do not have to order any additional photo packages above that offered by the free gift certificate.

The certificate is only good on the November 4th Portrait Sitting held at the VFW Post home and only one certificate per sitting may be used.  Photos will be ready for viewing at the VFW Post home about two weeks after photo day and will be back in time for your Christmas card mailings!  Olan Mills will even do the Christmas card work for you with their special offer on Christmas card purchases.

Come on!  Take the plunge…and get those long awaited group or individual photos taken and earn money for the general fund at the same time. See our sign-up sheet and frequently asked questions on display at the Post.
